Spectra: Issue #3

Spectra #3 for PhysicsCentral.com

Here’s the third installment of the adventures of the laser-powered superhero Spectra. In this comic that I illustrate for the American Physical Society and PhysicsCentral.com, we see the first appearance of General Leslie J. Relativity, a gruff, distinguished military veteran. When he comes to teach at Spectra’s school everyone becomes curious about his mysterious experiments in his physics laboratory.

I had the opportunity to create a huge (2 feet x 6 feet) vertical caricature for the instructors at a local child care center. I know these women well, because my son attended the facility for three years when he was younger. The football player was a staffer who was not there on picture day.

From a recent press write-up:

Kerry G. Johnson: Award-winning cartoonist encourages children to follow their artistic dreams

What does it take to become a successful cartoonist and caricaturist? That was one of the many questions asked of Kerry G. Johnson, an award-winning cartoonist, caricaturist and graphic designer, who spoke recently to a group of children at Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria,Va.

His answer: “You have to practice drawing everyday and never give up on your goal of getting your work published.”

Johnson, of Columbia, Md., was invited to talk to the third- and fourth-graders as part of the church’s Black History Month program. He told them that he began drawing while in kindergarten and knew he was destined to become an artist after winning first place in an art contest.

Several years ago, he and his wife, Tawanda, started the web comic, Harambee Hills on GoComics.com, which features the antics of a suburban African-American family.

“I never thought that I would get paid to be an artist, but happened for me, and it can happen for you,” he said.

Troy Polamalu caricature illustration Here was a fun project. A tractor retailer wanted a caricature of Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamulu riding atop a tractor for his Super Bowl party. It was an inside joke for his family and friends. It was an interesting assignment and since I am a Steelers fan, I enjoyed the challenge.

Welcome to the latest addition of the websites of caricaturist and illustrator Kerry G. Johnson. I am gradually transferring all my recent project work to this online location.
